Guide to Buying
Buyer’s Premium
Purchased Lots are subject to a buyer’s premium on a sliding scale, based on the hammer price:
• 17.5% on the first £250,000 of the hammer price
• 15% on the excess between £250,001 and £500,000 of the hammer price
• 12.5% on the excess between £500,001 and £1,000,000 of the hammer price
• 10% on the excess over £1,000,001
In addition, VAT is added to this premium
Classic Motorcycle and Car auctions have a special rate of buyer’s premium at 15% of the hammer price plus VAT.
Catalogues
Printed catalogues are available approximately two weeks before the auction, and all Lots are illustrated in the online catalogue on our website. To view a printable Calendar of our forthcoming auctions, click here
Viewing
All Lots are available to view in person at our saleroom, or other published venue, usually for the two days prior to each sale. Please ring the saleroom or view the sale details on our online catalogue for up-to-date information.
Condition Reports
Chorley’s strongly advises that prospective bidders view Lots in person and stresses that any descriptions, estimates and condition reports supplied are an opinion provided by this firm and do not guarantee the condition, age, value or any other characteristic of the Lot in question. The absence of a condition report on our online catalogue does not imply that the Lot is without imperfection or damage, only that a condition report has not been undertaken.
Bidding
To be able to bid at a Chorley’s auction, you must register and obtain a paddle number from our saleroom office. If you have not bid with us before, you will be asked to provide proof of identity and residence, such as driver's licence photocard, passport, current utility bill. New bidders and absentee bidders will be also asked to supply valid credit or debit card details.
If you are unable to attend the auction to bid in person, you can leave commission bids or register for telephone bidding or online bidding.
Payment
Acceptable methods of payment for Lots:
Sterling cash (maximum £8,000 per auction)
Debit card drawn on a UK bank
Credit card (maximum £5,000 per auction) - a 3% surcharge will apply
Bank transfer to Chorley's account:

Cheques and banker's drafts will not be accepted unless agreed in advance with a Director of Chorley's.
Chorley's will not accept payments from any party other than the registered bidder.
Absentee payments by credit/debit card will not be accepted over the telephone but must be made through the secure payment page on Chorley's website, after which a clearance period of 72 hours will apply before the Lots are available for release.
Collection & Storage
We request that all purchased Lots are collected by 5pm on the Friday one week after the auction. Unless otherwise agreed with the Auctioneers, any Lots remaining at the saleroom after this time will incur a removal charge of £10, plus storage fees of £2 per Lot per day (all subject to VAT). Please note that payment must be cleared in our account before the goods will be released. Purchasers who pay by credit card over the telephone by credit card must bring the payment card with them when they collect, otherwise the Lots will not be released for a period of 72 hours from time of payment.
For details of couriers and shipping firms, please refer to our Shipping section.
ALL BIDDERS ARE REQUIRED TO READ AND ABIDE BY OUR CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS.
