Press Release for 30.11.06 Sale
Auctioneers call time at Southam Tithe Barn
Simon Chorley Art and Antiques’ last sale at the Tithe Barn near Cheltenham racecourse will be held on Thursday 30th November. The Auctioneers, previously Bruton Knowles, have used the Barn for sales for at least the last thirty years. The development of the new saleroom at Prinknash Abbey Park is well under way and the inaugural sale will take place early next year, with some very fine lots already consigned.
As if marking this passage of time, one of the strongest parts of the sale on 30th November is the clock section. This includes a fine George I red lacquer bracket clock by Peter Garon, estimated at £6,000-8,000, a late 18th Century bracket clock by Richardson, Warwick, estimated at £1,500-2,000 and a 19th Century bracket clock in a Gothic metal case by Davey of Lewes estimated at £750-850. Also included are a fascinating variety of longcase, ormolu and carriage clocks…..a must for clock lovers with time on their hands!
This is an interesting sale with something for everyone. For lovers of past times there is an oil painting of a sailing ship beside a quay. Painted by William Webb this is estimated at £3,000-4,000. There are more fine pictures by Constant Artz, Petrus van Schendel 1863, William Widgery 1878 and others.
In the china section is a late 19th Century Wedgwood majolica game dish, a Minton majolica vase and part of an impressive Masons Ironstone dinner service. For those with more space than just a mantelpiece or china cabinet there is an Italian blue and white vase which stands 28 inches high.
A reflection of more gracious living in the silver section includes two beautifully fitted dressing cases with silver mounted fittings and a late George III composite kings pattern table service for eight settings. To enhance your alcoholic enjoyment over the coming festive season, the auction will also offer a pair of Georgian cut glass triple decanters and several other decanter sets, some in smart fitted cases.
Among the fine furniture is an early 19th Century Scottish mahogany sideboard (estimate £1,800-2,200), a mid 18th Century Lancashire breakfront dresser (estimate £1,200-1,500) and an interesting pair of crouching blackamoor figures (27 inches high), which originally came from Wilsford Manor in Wiltshire (estimate £3,500-4,500).
